
KEEPING GENTSETS QUIET IN LUXURY SAILBOATS
AMC MECANOCAUCHO’s technical department has been assisting Marshall day France and the technical department company servicing several luxury boats in Cannes, France. The customer of a Luxury Sailboat was willing to improve the acoustic insulation of a generating set. Light structures on sailing boats are always a challenge to get good soundproofing results. On this case study, we will describe the technical procedure to achieve this goal.
AMC MECANOCAUCHO ENGINEERING SERVICE.
On the 1th of October 2019, Marshall day and the technical department of AMC-MECANOCAUCHO discussed about a case where a Cummins Onan ECO 138544 genset on a Luxury sailboat where the owner wanted a high level of Acoustic insulation.
The generator set had a weight of 420Kg and was rotating at frequency 1500rpm. The set was inside a canopy as it can be seen below.

First step: Understand the existing installation
AMC-MECANOCAUCHO decided to make a mathematical model in order to simulate the vibration isolation results of several possible vibration isolators on the range of AMC-MECANOCAUCHO. For this purpose, the axial, radial and longitudinal stiffness, dynamic stiffening ratios and damping per axis were taken in consideration. This calculation allowed to understand the actual natural frequencies of the system, vibration modes and estimate the actual level of vibration isolation.

Second step: Select
vibration isolators
that can allow a better isolation without putting in compromise the stability of the generator set
The technical dept of AMC-MECANOCAUCHO performed further iteration to find an vibration isolator that would improve the theoretical vibration isolation without putting in compromise the stability of the generator set.
Low natural frequency was required for providing a high level of acoustic insulation. High deflection mounts were required for this purpose. Since high deflection is not compatible with stability, an Vibrabsorber+Sylomer® antiseismic spring mounts were used. These vibration isolators incorporate lateral rubber buffers to keep the generator set stable. The anticorrosive treatment of the metal parts are in epoxy, this feature assures a long lasting resistance to this arduous environment.

Third step: Presentation and acceptance of AMC ENGINEERING proposal.
After analyzing the solution proposed by AMC-MECANOCAUCHO the customer decided to follow our recommendation and accept our proposal. The mounts were sent by express to France.

Fourth step: Installation of AMC-MECANOCAUCHO vibration isolators.
The Vibrabsorber+Sylomer® antiseismic mounts are equipped with a layer of Sylomer® to isolate the high frequencies that could go through the spring. AMC-MECANOCAUCHO also supplies decoupling washers in Sylomer® for the fixation of the spring to the ground.
CONCLUSION:
AMC ENGINEERING SERVICE is a tool that is performed by the technical team of AMC-MECANOCAUCHO. Following a technical procedure, correct results can be achieved.
